Vicar of Knowl Hill and Also Bray when he diedHe was a nephew of Jane Austen's, through her eldest brother James and family friend Mary Lloyd. He published the first family authorized/family contributed memoir about Jane Austen entitled "A Memoir of Jane Austen" in 1869. A second edition published in 1871 was much expanded to include more letters and biographical material.

NB: Until the death of the Leigh-Perrots, he was Known as James Edward Austen. Upon the death of his great-aunt and his father James who was her heir, his family became known as the Austen-Leighs.
