We welcomed Sammy into our family on December 19, 2015. Sammy was a rescue who was found in St. Louis, MO in a church parking lot jumping on car doors asking for help. Fortunately, a kind family took him in and brought him to a no-kill shelter. From there, he found his way to suburban Chicago where we met this beautiful dog.
He was approximately 14 months old when we adopted Sammy. He joined our family which included 3 children and another wonderful rescue dog. Sammy & Olivia (our other rescue dog, a Black Lab mix) very quickly became best friends, always together while eating, playing, sleeping literally doing everything together.
When Sammy was about 18 months old we were shocked to learn that he had heartworm and needed extensive treatment. This treatment was traumatic to Sammy and after it was completed, his personality changed to a more cautious yet still loving dog. One of the big challenges we had with him was that he no longer agreed to have his teeth brushed or getting a bath. We accepted these two these two minor obstacles, and came up with a few alternative solutions. For his oral health, Sammy went to the vet to have his teeth cleaned as needed. Bathing him required a little more creativity and trickery getting him into the bathtub. However, once in the tub he was a prince and just accepted the bath.
Sammy and Olivia both loved doing everything together including playing together in their big backyard, however, his true love was being walked around our one mile block, twice a day.
When Sammy turned 7 years old, he developed a cough. Despite receiving the very best vet care, our beloved Sammy died just a few months later, the victim of lung cancer (shocking to us because no one in our family smoked). On October 14, 2022 at 10:35am our beautiful Golden Retriver, Sammy entered the Gates of Heaven not even 8 years old. Rest In Peace sweet Sammy. You will be in our hearts forever.
