Memorial services for Mrs. Elizabeth Winnelle Wallace will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25, 2022, at Pine Ridge Baptist Church, Melder, with Reverend Jason Townley officiating.

Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery, under the direction of Rush Funeral Home, Hineston.

Elizabeth Winnelle Gordey Wallace, 87, died peacefully while she slept on November 13, 2022.

She was the oldest of two children born to Louis Gordey and Una McGilvray Gordey in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 7, 1935.

She was twelve years old when the family relocated to Glenmora, Louisiana, where she attended Glenmora Baptist Church. At school in Glenmora, she was a popular student who participated in numerous clubs and activities. After graduating Glenmora High School in 1952, she attended Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge where she lived on campus and studied English Literature and History. Winnelle graduated with honors from LSU in 1956 earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at LSU, she met her future husband with whom she partnered to establish a very successful real estate and insurance enterprise. She was essential to their early successes. She was instrumental in growing the community of Baker, LA while making it a great place to raise a family. She sacrificed her professional pursuits to focus on being the best mother to her four children. During this time, she returned to LSU to study law. She was near completion when, unfortunately, she was compelled to resign her progress and spend full time nursing a gravely injured son back to full health and strength. In the end it was HER strength that prevailed.

Winnelle had a strong ideology of family bonds and devoted years of her life researching and compiling extensive genealogical archives- and she did it all before the internet. She loved to travel and was proud to have visited all fifty states. Her travels also took her to Europe, Central and South America, and The Holy Land. She was an enthusiastic fan of Tigers and Saints football! Winnelle also enjoyed square dancing, crochet and needle point, and fashioning costume jewelry. Her true passion was reading. Winnelle was an avid reader and book collector who amassed an extensive personal library. She was a founding member of the Lucky Clover Study Club, a group devoted to literary review. Her little dog Cassie, was "the light of her life."

Winnelle was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Marvin Gordey; one daughter, Rianne Reed Mills; one son, Rubin Wallace; and one granddaughter, Lauren Reed.

She is survived by two sons, Ricky Wallace and Russell Wallace; ten grandchildren, Dustin, David, Becca, Ethan, Sarah, Chastin, Kirsten, Camryn, Reagan and Rachel; and numerous great grandchildren.

A time of visitation will be held at Pine Ridge Baptist Church, Melder, on Friday, November 25, 2022, at 12:00 noon until time of services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Special Olympics specialolympics.org or Rolling River Rescue rrrrescue.org
