Louis Lindberg had been friends and schoolmates of Oliver Hanson. The both worked as farmhands in the same area near North Bend. A day or so before the tragedy, Oliver ws missing a sum of money from his room and suspected that Louis had taken it. This caused Louis to become angry. He later borrowed a pistol from a neighbor, saying he needed to shoot a raccoon. He hid in a cornfield and when Oliver came by, he came out and confronted him. Oliver still accused him of stealing his money, and Louis started shooting, wounding Oliver twice. Louis then ran into the cornfield. he was later found there dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The missing money was never found.
