Kentucky Governor. Elected in 1979, he started his term as the 55th Governor of Kentucky on December 11, 1979 where he remained until December 13, 1983. He was the son of U.S. Congressman John Young Brown Sr. He attended Lafayette High School in Lexington and the University of Kentucky, where he earned his bachelor's and law degrees and joined his father's law firm after graduation. From 1959 to 1965, he also served in the United States Army Reserve. He was part of an investment firm that bought out Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and helped to turn it from a family style restaurant to a fast-food take-out business. He was also part owner in several professional basketball teams that included the ABA Kentucky Colonels. Unlike his father, he showed very little interest in establishing a long-term political career. He was married three times and divorced three times. His first marriage was to Eleanor Durall in 1960 and divorced in 1977 then he married actress and Miss America winner Phyllis George in 1979, to whom he stayed married to until 1998 and finally to Jill Roach in 1998 until 2003. He did make an unsuccessful run for governor in 1987. He also formed a partnership with singer and actor Kenny Rogers in 1991 and became the co-founder and CEO of Kenny Rogers Roasters restaurant. He was inducted into the University of Kentucky College of Law Alumni Association's Hall of Fame in 2008. He passed away at a hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
