Something in the early 1880's visited the Lewellen family in Howard County, Indiana near the town of Jerome. We don't know if it was Scarlet Fever, Cholera, TB or some other rapidly spreading illness. Shortly after the 1880 census was taken, Thomas Lewellen's wife, Miriam Osborn Lewellen, as well as two of their children. William O. Lewellen, husband of Rachel Spurlin, and Eunice Amanda Lewellen (aka Melissa) wife of Daniel Minor who were children of Thomas and Miriam both died during this time period. William's widow, Rachel, married Eunice's husband, Daniel, in 1883 in Howard County, Indiana. Thomas Lewellen remarried in 1882 to Lydia Davis, but died shortly after in 1883. It is unknown if any of William's and Eunice's children died in this time era, but it is entirely possible.
