Anton and wife Elise came to America from Bohemia in 1874 and arrived to Baltimore, Maryland with their son Joseph, daughter-in-law Therese and grandson Joseph, JR. They after Joseph Jr while his parents returned to Bohemia to fetch their two young daughters. Anton and Elise first settled at Manitowoc Rapids and in those early years wild Indians and bears roamed through the woods. The women folk were left a shot gun to protect themselves when the men were away from home.
