The history contains short biographical sketches of early members. This is text of the sketch devoted to John Gilbert (father of Mary Ann Gilbert Grier):
"John Gilbert - Became a member of Magnolia Lodge No. 86 in 1866. He was born in Hancock County, Ga., on November 10, 1818. He married Mary [Powell] Hill and was the father of Mrs. Mary Ann Grier, Mrs. Louisa Gunn, Mrs. Virginia Harris and John M. and William C. Gilbert. Judge Gilbert lived out on the Chattahoochee River and owned Gilbert's Landing. He died on July 10, 1882." (N.B. "Mrs. Virginia Harris" should be "Mrs. Phoebe Harris.")
Although not named in the sketch published by the Masons of Early County, Susan Sirmons was also a daughter; John Gilbert called her "my illegitimate child" in his will, made and probated in Early County in 1882.
John Gilbert was buried at Gilbert's Landing on the Chattahoochee River.
