United States Coast Guard Admiral. A native of Washington, he graduated from Santa Maria Junior College in California in 1940. In 1943 he graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy and was commissioned as an Ensign assigned to the assault troop transport "USS Hunter Liggett". Seeing service in the Pacific during World War Two, he was re-assigned to the "USS Bayfield" in 1945. In 1946 he was sent to Alameda, California where, after briefly servicing as Personnel Officer of the Manning Section at the Alameda Training Station, he was assigned to the Cutter Taney. In 1948 he earned his wings and was assigned to the Coast Guard Air Station at Port Angeles, Washington. In 1954 he was appointed aide and administrative pilot to Coast Guard Commandant Alfred Richmond, serving until 1959. From 1962 until 1964 he served as Chief of the Search and Rescue Branch of the 17th Coast Guard District. In 1967 he became Chief of the Administrative management Division at Coast Guard Headquarters. After he was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1971, he was named commander of the 2nd Coast Guard District. In 1974 he was appointed the 15th Commandant of the United States Coast Guard serving until his retirement in 1978.
