Miss Winifred Mohnkern, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Mohnkern of 530 Colbert Avenue, was among 4 area enlistees in the Women's Marine Corps who left here yesterday for Paris Island, SC. She graduated from Oil City High School in 1953 where she played drums in the band, worked at F. W. Woolworth Co., and was a member of the local VFW band and Rocky Grove Firemen's band. She was feted recently at a party by two aunts, Mrs. Elsie Smith of Imperial Street, and Mrs. Edna Smith.

Mr. and Mrs. James A. Mohnkern of 530 Colbert Avenue announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage April 12 of their daughter, Winifred "Peggy" to Samuel Bemus, son of Mrs. G. E. Bemus of 715 Moran Street, Oil City, in Our Lady, Help of Christians Church. She graduated from Oil City High School in 1954. Bemus recently returned from Korea where he served 18 months with the U. S. Army.

Margaret Winifred Bemis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mohnkern of Siverly, and Richard B. McCracken, son of Mrs. Robert F. McCracken of 1340 1/2 Otter Street and the late Mr. McCracken, were married at 7 pm Saturday in the parsonage of First Evangelical United Brethren Church, with Dr. B. E. Coleman officiating. Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. William McCracken, bother and sister-in-law of the groom. Mr. McCracken works at Joy Manufacturing Co. They will live at 1308 Franklin Avenue.

Mrs. Winifred "Peggy" McCracken, 28, of 311 4th Street, died at 2:45 am today at home after a 10 months' illness. She was born in Oil City June 16, 1935, daughter of James and Winifred Smith Mohnkern.


She spent most of her life in Oil City, graduated from Oil City High School in 1954, and served in the Women's Division of the Marine Corps during the Korean War. After her marriage, she lived in Franklin.


On April 21, 1956, she married Richard McCracken, who survives, with three daughters, Barbara, Debbie, and Diane, all of Franklin; her parents; a brother, James Mohnkern; a sister, Jean Mohnkern; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Mohnkern, all of Oil City.


Services will be at 10 am Monday at Gabrys Bros. Funeral Home. Interment will be in Rockland Cemetery.
