Funeral services for Gerald Wayne Hampton, 22, Athens Rt. 5, who was a member of the National Guard 1343rd Engineering Battalion, and barn manager for the Limestone County Feeder Pig Association, were at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Carmel Church of Christ, James Bridges officiated. Burial was in Athens Roselawn Cemetery, McConnell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Hampton was headed for the Tennessee River to run some trot lines. He was an avid and successful fisherman. He had launched his fishing rig at Elk River Park being developed by his father, Leo Hampton. Limestone County Coroner, Charlie Sammet, said the boat apparently hit a wave and Hampton was tossed out immediately. The boat went out of control, circled and hit a pier on the bridge and was not heavily damaged. Witnesses, Sammet reported, said Hampton was thrown out when the boat whirled around. He added that Hampton apparently strangled and drowned. Witnesses who were swimming near the Limestone County side of the river rushed to Hampton with an inner tube but the efforts were futile, Sammet said.

Mr. Hampton was a 1964 graduate of Clements High School where he had played basketball. He worked for his father, Limestone County Feeder Pig Association and the Limestone County Stockyard. He had just been made a Specialist Four in the National Guard. The young man had been married four years as of this month.

Surviving are his wife, the former Nina Eastep; father, Leo Hampton and step-mother, Mrs. Lorene Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Ray Miller and Miss Kathy Hampton; grandmother, Mrs. James Hampton Sr., all from Athens Rt. 5; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Christopher, Pulaski, Tenn., great-grandmother, Mrs. J. A. Christopher, Minor Hill, Tenn.

Pallbearers were Thomas Ezell, Charles Ezell, James McGlocklin, Ray Allen, Ferrell Allen and Ralph Shaw.

Honorary pallbearers were Dickie White, Dany Ball, Dwight Ezell, Dickie Hobbs, Paul Smith Jr., Ross Smith Jr., Buddy King and Woodrow Hooie.
