A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Jasper and Kate Dotson Whitaker. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Trantham Whitaker, who died in 1985 and a brother, Quay Whitaker.
Wates was a co-founder and owner of AAA Parts of Asheville.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Pafford Whitaker; one daughter, Christine W. Richardson and her husband, Robert, of Fort Mill, SC; one grandson, Paul S. Richardson, of Waxhaw, NC and six nieces.
