David Joachim Runge was the son of ship owner and merchant Daniel Nicolaus Johann Runge (1737-1825) and Magdalena Dorothea née Müller (1737-1818).
Sometime before 1802, he married Sophie Regina Christina née Otto (1785-1853), the daughter of a tenant farmer.
Together they had ten children: Karl Albert (1802-1892), Daniel Ewald Friedrich (1804-1864), Georg Wilhelm (1805 - ?), Pauline (1807-1887), Ludwig Ferdinand (1807-1878), Franz Herman (1812 - ?), Marie Louise Sophie (1814 - ?), Adolph Bernhard Runge (1816 - ?), August Siegesmond (1818-1865), and Rudolf Heinrich (1823-1897).
Runge lived/worked as a tenant farmer at the manor house in Ludorf, Germany for about 12 years. Several of his children were born there.
