E. ADAIR MERRELL, 80, lifetime area resident and farmer passed away Monday February 11, 2008 at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces.

Adair was born March 25, 1927 in Virden, New Mexico to Orson A. and Lucinda Payne Merrell. He grew up and attended school in Virden and then served 1? years in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He later attended Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher for two years where he met Mary Costner. They were united in marriage on November 19, 1948.

Adair managed his fathers John Deere Agency in Duncan for two years before purchasing a farm in Animas in February 1951. He partnered with Archie Payne and they had an air hanger moved in to Cotton City where part was used to live in and the other part was used for storing fertilizer and sorting onions. In November 1951 Adair accepted the job of managing the cotton gin and over the next several years he farmed in Cotton City as well as in Rodeo. In 1965 Adair and Marcel Mortenson formed a partnership and later established M & M Hog Farm in Cotton City.

During these years Adair held many positions in the L.D.S. Church including being Bishop of the Animas Ward and as President of the Duncan, Arizona Stake. He served eight years as 1st Vice President of the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau and 10 years as president of the Arizona Pork Producers Association. He was chairman of the Hidalgo County Hospital Board for two years and served in many other farm cooperatives and civic organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Merrell of Animas; sons, Randy Merrell and his wife Barbara of Clint, TX, Barton Merrell and his wife Hiroko of Pleasant Grove, UT; daughters, Julia Ellena and her husband Bill of Susanville, CA, Janis Hardy and her husband Richard of Pleasant Grove, UT, Louise Fralie and her husband Wayne of Animas, Carolyn Harmon and her husband Bill of Thatcher, AZ; 2 brothers, Bill Merrell and his wife Arva Lue of Garland, UT, Ned Merrell and his wife Jean of Duncan, AZ; 22 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

Adair was preceded in death by one daughter, Jolene Merrell in April 1974, and by 4 sisters and 1 brother.

Visitation will be Saturday morning beginning at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Cotton City where funeral services will begin at 11 o'clock. Interment will follow at the Cotton City LDS Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Brandon, Jarrett, and Derrek Ellena, Brian, Calvin and Ron Merrell, Weston Fralie and Steven Harmon. Honorary bearers are Alan Merrell, Sam and Aaron Hardy.
