Mr. Stephen John Phillips, 58, of 515 Whippoorwill Lane, Walterboro, died Friday morning, August 17, 2007, at his residence surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Odyssey Health Care Hospice. Funeral services will be held 11 o'clock Tuesday morning, August 21, 2007, from the graveside with full military honors in Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary Street, Beaufort, with The Reverend Dr. A. Robert Nix officiating. Following the funeral service beginning at 2 o'clock the family will be receiving friends for fellowship and a meal at Bethel United Methodist Church, 355 Hampton Street, Walterboro. Mr. Phillips was born January 11, 1949, in Brooklyn, New York and was a son of the late George F. Phillips and the late Harriet Myers Phillips. He had attended the John Brown University in Arkansas and served his country in the United States Army, having been assigned to the Screaming Eagles Unit of 101st Airborne 320 Artillery Division during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a retired installation technician with Bell South Telephone in Charleston. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the Telephone Pioneers of America. An avid sportsman, Steve will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, hunting wild game, and watching wildlife. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association. Surviving are: his loving wife of 23 years, Mrs. Patti Davis Phillips; and the children of his heart, Dawn Marie Barnes and her husband Kenny of Woodstock, Georgia, Angie Cates and her husband Gary of Walterboro, Kaycee Catterton, Hope Catterton, and Marshall Catterton, Jr. all of Walterboro, Jennifer Lee Sutler and her husband William of Mount Pleasant, Paul Rials and his wife Lauren of Mount Pleasant, SGT Jonathan Rials and his wife Melissa of Camp Pendleton, California, George William, Lucy, Lauren, Trevor, Luke, Maykayla, Andrew, Tyler, Kayla, Joey, Nicole, Taylor, Chad, Rachel, Jessie, James, Brian Jr., Jonathan, Spencer, and William Charles. There are three brothers, Paul F. Phillips of Walterboro, Robert Phillips of Queens, New York, Allen Phillips of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and a sister, Linda M. Tarvena of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; as well as, many friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by one he loved as his own Brian Warren. Flowers will be accepted, or for those that wish, the family has suggested that memorials be directed in his memory to the following: Colleton County Relay for Life, 5900 Core Road, Suite 504, North Charleston, SC 29406; or to, Odyssey Health Care Hospice, 5965 Core Road, Suite 603, North Charleston, SC 29406.
