Edmund Bennet was a tobacco cutter from Bristol, England and a wealthy land owner/speculator in early Pennsylvania; a "First Purchaser" of 1,000a in Bucks Co.

He was an early settler of Northampton Twp (originally called Neshaminy) although he owned extensive lands in Bristol Twp, Bucks Co about 16 miles south. These lands were bounded on the east by Neshaminy Creek and settled by English Friends about 1682. Among the original landowners / First Purchasers were: Edmund Bennet (1,000a); Thomas Croasdale (1,000a); Nicholas Waln (1,000a); Cuthbert Hayhurst (500a); Thomas Walmsley's widow Elizabeth (100a); William Plumly's widow Margaret (unk acres); Christopher Taylor (5,000a); Samuel Allen (2,000a) and many others.

Bennet took up 300 acres of land in Bucks Co, PA, before the arrival of William Penn per warrant dated 12 mo/Feb 1, 1682.

The minutes of the Board of Property of 9 mo/Nov 8, 1703, contains the following entry:

"The Proprietary by deed dated 7ber/Sep 25, '81, granted to Edm'nd Bennett 1,000 acres, who by warrant dated 12 mo/Feb 1, '82, took up 300 a's In Bristol Township, in Bucks, and the said Edm'd by his last will, dat. 5, 7ber/Sep '92, Granted his whole Estate to his wife Eliz'th Bennett, who by her deed dated 8mo/Oct 22, 1702, Conveyed 100 a's Part thereof, to Wm. Crosdale. The said Tract being resurveyed is found to Contain 151 a's, for the Overplus of which he Offers £10, being Barren. A Patent is granted, the Consideration to be for Services and No Sum."

His 1st wife was Hannah Unknown who died in Aug 1684, and was buried on the 11th at Neshaminy Burial Ground, Bucks Co, PA.

In March of 1684 the minor sons of John Spencer, decs'd (a First Purchaser who died 10mo/Dec 22, 1683), were bound to Edmund Bennett and John Otter (a neighbor and original settler who d. in 1709) – James (age 14) to John Otter and Samuel (age 12) to Edmund Bennet as their Guardians.

Edmund Bennet and widow Elizabeth (Unk) Potts (maiden name of Bassett is an invention) were married per Quaker tradition: "On 8 mo/Oct 5, 1685 Elizabeth Potts and Edmund Bennett of Bucks County declared their intentions of marriage before the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting. On 10 mo/Dec 7, 1685 they presented their intentions the required second time and were allowed to proceed.
On 10mo/Dec 22, 1685, Edmund Bennet of Bucks Co married the widow Elizabeth Potts at the house of John Otter near Burlington (now Bristol), Bucks Co, PA. Among the witnesses: John Otter; James Spencer; Thomas + Jane (Bond) Atkinson; William + Jane Dungan (sic Dunkan). Michael Huff, et al.

Edmund Bennet was granted a warrant for taking up his "Liberty land" which was proportionate with his 1,000 acre original purchase, dated 12 mo/Feb 22, 1689-90. Penn set aside a certain tract of land lying north and west of the city, called "liberty lands" or "free lots" and named for the First Purchasers of ground in the colony who each received a portion of this land free of price. The liberty lands on the east side of the Schuylkill became a township and were called the Northern Liberties, while the western Liberties, beyond the Schuylkill, became a portion of the township of Blockley.

In the Will of Henry Bartlett, dated 7mo/Sep 4, 1690, Henry names his uncles Edmund Bennet and Richard Bennet; brother John Bartlett, sisters Mary Simonds + Elizabeth Painter. Letters were granted to Henry's wife Prudence Bartlett.

On 5 Sep 1692, Edmond Bennet wrote his Will #83; he named his wife Elizabeth as sole Executrix. He left his entire estate to her, with the assistance of "loving friends" John Kinsey, John Jones & John Otter as Overseers. He left a legacy of one shilling to nephew Jno. Bartlett "now in England". Witnesses Thomas Roberts (husband of Elizabeth's gr-daughter Elinor Potts), Jane Austin (Elizabeth's daughter Jane Potts wife of John Austin and Theodore Roberts. Proved 24 7ber (Sept) 1692,

On 23 Sep 1692, his Personal estate was inventoried by Wm Gabitas & Joshua Hastinges at £123.19.00

On 24 Sep 1692, a £150 Admin Bond was granted to Elizabeth Bennett, widow of Edmond Bennett, late of Bucks County, with her son David Potts of "Maryon" as her bondsman; she to make a true accounting by 24th day of seventh month 1693.

Widow Elizabeth (Unk) Potts-Bennet ultimately sold off the lands of her deceased husband and died 1mo/Mar 8, 1708 at Philadelphia. She was buried at the "Quaker Burying Ground" at Philadelphia, PA
