CARR, Howard Eugene "Gene", Jr., died on December 8, 2022, at the age of 85 in Henrico, Va., following a long illness.
Gene was born in Peoria, Ill. to Howard E. Carr Sr. and Lucille M. O'Conner, and quickly learned the benefits of being an only child in a doting household. After graduating parochial school Gene persuaded his dad, over his Catholic mother's protests, to attend public high school where he excelled in athletics, student government, socializing and, occasionally, academics. His prep football career earned Gene a scholarship to the University of Illinois. There he rode planes, trains, automobiles and, most often, the pine visiting the 'big houses' of the Big 10.
Following commencement at UI, Gene landed his best and biggest job: marriage to Molly Kennedy, his wife of 47 years, until her death in 2006. Molly was able to temper Gene's appetite for life but mostly she just enjoyed the ride with 'Geno' whose personality, humor, cooking prowess, penchant for useless trivia and love of family sustained their relationship for decades.
After a distinguished career in sales, retiring from Viking Range Company in 2007, Gene settled into a life of hacking (on the golf course), stacking (foodstuffs for a local pantry) and tracking (the highways and byways of the world). But he found his real comfort at home, amongst family and friends.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Molly; and son, Gregory E. Carr. He is survived by his son, Bryan D. Carr; daughter-in-law, Julia Carr; granddaughter, Winston Jobrack (Ben); grandson, Andrew G. Carr; and great-granddaughter, Molly Jobrack.
A Celebration of Life to honor Gene will be held in early 2023. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Feed More (give.feedmore.org).
