"The McLouth Times" published Friday, April 6, 1900 - Mattie Harris was born on her father's farm near Wild Horse and died of appendicitis Friday morning, March 30, 1900, at Jack Attwood's whither she had gone on a visit, and was taken too ill to be removed to her home. Mattie was only ten years old, yet a great deal was wrapped up in that short life. Her mother died when she was a mere babe and her eldest sister has been her god-mother, and those who were at the funeral doubt not the pure affection that existed between these two children. Mattie was a sweet, innocent little girl, dearly beloved by all who knew her. Her kind, intelligent, gentle ways impressed those around her. In school she was a favorite and the last few days of school were filled with sadness, in the expectation of her death. School was out on Thursday and that night the spirit of the little pupil whom all had learned to love, took its flight to God.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon and the remains of our little friend were surrounded by sorrowing schoolmates, sympathetic neighbors and grief burdened relatives. It was the most impressive funeral we ever attended and was a lesson in love and simplicity to all. Strong men wept like children and did not feel ashamed for so doing.

Little Mattie was laid to rest in the Wild Horse cemetery in sight of the school ground on which she played a week before. "Tis a lesson that we all must learn." We shall one by one be gathered to our far distant home by those who in their turn shall follow us. Our sincerest sympathy is extended to the sorrow stricken family.
