Russell took a trip with his father to Chicago in the summer of 1880. He was offered a good position in an accounting house but decided to pursue a job with Goodrich Lines. Goodrich operated steamers from Chicago to various points of the eastern shore of lake Michigan. Russell was on the steamer Alpena which ran into a terrific storm on 10 Oct 1880. On shore winds were recorded at 125 miles per hour. The Alpena sunk and all souls were lost. Only a few bodies were recovered
