Roger was born to Howard and Bessie (Edwards) Mershon on November 8, 1935 in Franklin Grove, IL. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1956, primarily stationed in Germany. Roger married Elizabeth Bates on December 6, 1958 in Rochelle, IL. Together they raised three children. Roger was an avid golfer even achieving a hole-in-one on old #6 at Sinnissippi Golf Course. He was also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. Roger and his family enjoyed watching baseball together.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Mershon of Freeport; two children, Theresa (Blair) Mershon-Samuelson of Coos Bay, OR, Jeffrey (Teresa) Mershon of Richmond, TX; three grandchildren, Erin Rombout, Alex Rombout, Julia Mershon; three great-grandchildren, Hailee Chavirs, Carl Greer, Lilly Greer; two sisters, Linda (Larry) Overstreet of Warsaw, IN, Bonnie Gennusa of Freeport, IL; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Roger was preceded in death by his father, Howard Mershon; mother and step-father, Bessie and Carl Sunday; daughter, Julia Rombout; granddaughter, Janelle Rombout and sister, Maribeth Greer.
A Memorial Service was held Friday, December 30, 2022 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home, 504 North Walnut Ave, Freeport, IL 61032. Visitation was held prior to time of service. Chaplain Sean Huguenin, will officiate.
Roger's family want to express their "Many Thanks to the excellent staff at WinnPrairie Assisted Living and Promedica Hospice" for Roger's exceptional care.
