Richard George Skowronek, 92, of Ellicott City, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2022 surrounded by his family.

Richard was born on October 10, 1930 to Arthur and Anna Skowronek in Kertschuetz, Silesia, Germany. In 1947, his family moved to Sulzbach-Rosenberg and he continued his education in Nurnberg, Germany until he immigrated to the United States in 1957. Richard joined his brother Rudolf and family in Madison,Wisconsin and proudly became a United States citizen.

After graduating from the Milwaukee School of Engineering, he became an engineer with Bendix Corporation and moved to Maryland in 1966. He worked as a communications specialist to support NASA's space program. This work provided him with the opportunity to travel extensively around the world until he retired in 1996.

In 1968, he married Marie Klaus of Baltimore and had 3 children Karlheinz, Kurt-Juergen and Elisabeth. They resided in Ellicott City and were members of Saint Paul's Catholic Church for 50 years. He was very active in the German Community working to promote the German culture in Maryland through membership in many German social clubs (Edelweis, Kickers, Immergrun, Germania Lodge [Past Master] and the German Society of Maryland). In 1979, he and his wife founded Verein Deutsche Trachten, a German folk dance and cultural preservation group. He particularly delighted and appreciated working with young people, reminding them to preserve their German heritage and enjoy dancing.

Richard enjoyed being an airplane pilot, hunting and fishing, attending German events, dancing, traveling to visit his family in Germany, driving Volkswagens, tinkering in his yard, working in his garden, winemaking and dining out. Richard was an avid beekeeper; Opa's Apiary. His greatest joy was being an "Opa" to his eleven grandchildren. They all adore him. Opa was loved and respected by everyone he met.

He is survived and is missed greatly by his wife Marie and children Karlheinz Skowronek (Maria), Kurt-Juergen Skowronek (Nicole), Elisabeth Czaja (Ed), 11 grandchildren (Alex Skowronek, Eric Czaja, Elaina Skowronek, Brendan Skowronek, Emily Czaja, Lorelei Skowronek, Peter Czaja, Katerina Skowronek, Mathilda Skowronek, Leopold Skowronek and Konrad Skowronek), nieces and nephew (Anneliese Emerson, Gisela Newbegin, Rita and Helmut Scheja, Sabine Grassinger and Ulrike Hofer) and sister-in-law Karoline Skowronek of Trasselberg, Germany.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Shrine of Saint Anthony (Howard County), St. Paul's Catholic Church (Ellicott City) or Saint Casimir's Catholic Church (Baltimore).
