Joanna was the daughter of Patrick Rawley. She immigrated to the United States and settled in Boston prior to Aug. 11, 1850, when she married John J. Callanan, an Irish immigrant who worked as a Porter. They were parents to the following known children: Mary E., born 1852; John F., born ca. 1857; Richard, born ca. 1859; Timothy James, born ca. 1862; Joseph, born Jan. 4, 1865; and Edward John, born 1867. Their son Joseph died in June 1865 and was the first of the family to be buried at Mount Calvary.

Joanna was residing at 1 Fourth St., South Boston when she died of uterine cancer at age 56. She was interred at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
