He was born in Punjab during The British Raj and his family moved to Glasgow, Scotland in the late 1950s, where his father opened the first Indian restaurant in the city. He opened his own restaurant, the Shish Mahal in Glasgow in 1964. In the 1970s, after a customer complained that the chicken tikka was too dry, he created a new tomato-based sauce for the dish. Noting that most of his European/Western customers did not handle spicy food well, he adapted a curry with yogurt, cream, and spices. This offering became the beloved chicken tikka masala. He considered his restaurant his passion and life's work, though he also engaged heavily in charity work benefiting Scotland and Pakistan. He married and had five children with his wife. A public funeral was held at Glasgow Central Mosque a day after his death.
