Amanda Chatfield was believed to be born 21 April 1878 in Staffordshire, England, daughter of Arthur and Olivia Chatfield. Official reccords say born 4th quarter 1879, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

She married 3rd quarter 1900, Daniel Jay, Plomesgate District, Suffolk. Daniel was born 25 November 1878 in Bedfield, Suffolk, England , son of William and Eliza Pearl Jay.

Dan and Amanda lived first at Marlesford, near Wickham Market, Suffolk where Dan found a job working on a farm. Three sons were born in Wickham Market: Daniel Arthur Jay, born March quarter 1901, died at birth, Charles Frederick Jay, 21 March 1902, and William Alfred Arthur Jay, 2 June 1903.

They moved to Heavitree, Exeter, Devon, about 1904. There, two daughters were born: Dulcie Ellen Jay, 19 August 1904 and Muriel Kate, 23 October, 1907. Two more daughters died at birth: Grace Amanda in 1906, Miriam Ivy, born 1908. They were both born at Heavitree, Devon.

In 1911, Daniel and Amanda are living at 28 Goldsmith Street, Heavitree, Exeter, Devon. They have 3 rooms.
Daniel is a genral labourer for the Exeter City Council. They have been married 11 years and had 8 children, four of whom survive. (Only seven births have been identified so far.) Frederick 8, William 7, Dulcie 6 and Muriel 3 are listed on the census.

Dan Jay worked for the church in Heavitree. The minister of the church emigrated to Canada and sponsored Dan, where they both hoped there would be more opportunity than in England. Dan went to Quebec where he found farm work and sent money home to his wife and four children who remained in England. Three of Dan's brothers and a cousin also emigrated to Quebec.

Dan hoped to settle his family in Canada, but Amanda did not care to leave England. She remained in England with her daughter, Muriel. Charles (Fred), Bill, and Dulcie emigrated to Canada with their father, after he finished his service in WWI. Dulcie was not happy to leave England. The brothers were quite enthusiastic.

Dan and Amanda were divorced in 1919. Amanda married a Mr. Treleaven, an architect, and had three more children: Bridie, who entertained in the English theatre, Yvonne and Thomas, twins. After her husband died about 1945, Amanda lived with her daughter, Bridie, in Windsor. She died October 21, 1967 and is buried in Hendon Cemetery.

Grave No. 74806 in section G8. 'Our darling mother so dearly loved. AMANDA TRELEAVEN died October 21st. 1967. "Life will never be the same until we meet again."'
