8/4/1912 Baptized; Clarence Artzer, born 7/29/1912, son of Peter Artzer born in Seewald Russia and Maria Schwert born in Kamencha Russia. Baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Topeka. Sponsors were Alois Weigel and Ceilia Schwert.

Clarence G. "Curley" Artzer, 89, Topeka, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at a Topeka hospice. Mr. Artzer owned and operated Artzer & Son Painting. He was born July 29, 1912, in Topeka, the son of Peter and Maria Schwerdt Artzer.

Mr. Artzer was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 534. He was a former member of the Sunrise Optimist Club, the Shawnee Sportsman Club, the Painters and Decorators Council of America, and the Over 55 Club at Assumption Catholic Church. He had been a member of the Topeka Moose Lodge since 1949, a member of the Kansas Sunflower Moose Legion since 1953 and had served as secretary for both organizations. He was a life member of the Topeka Moose Past Governors Club.

He married Marguerite Baum on Nov. 10, 1932, in Topeka. She died Nov. 21, 1999. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Jo Johnson, on March 6, 1999, and a grandson, Gary Johnson, on Feb. 14, 1996.

Survivors include three sons, Paul A. Artzer and Clarence "Butch" Artzer, both of Topeka, and Pete W. Artzer, Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Cathy Nicolay, Topeka; a sister, Sophie Sipes, Topeka; 15 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Friday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Artzer will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where a parish prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today followed by a Knights of Columbus Council No. 534 rosary at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to Midland Hospice House, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, 66606.
