Danah Beth Abbett passed away on January 1, 2023, in Garland, Texas. She was born on February 13, 1950, in Del Rio, Texas, to Elmer Eldon and Elsie Leola (Foster) Abbett. In 1968, she graduated from Del Rio High School, then attended Abilene Christian College, where she formed many lifelong friendships. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree (1972), then completed requirements for a Master of Education degree in Reading at Texas Women's University, as an all-level Reading Specialist (1978). Later, she did further post graduate studies in Spanish and Reading Recovery at Texas Women's University.
For 37 years she taught in Texas Schools, beginning in Killeen in 1972 and retiring in 2009 from Irving ISD. Most of her career was spent in the Irving Independent School District, where she was selected "Teacher of the Year" for both Brandenburg Elementary and the Irving Independent School District in 1997.
Danah was a member of Walnut Hill Church of Christ, Dallas. She was a past member of Texas Beta Omicron Chapter, Alpha Delta Kappa, Irving, Texas, as well as a member of Irving Historical Society, the local chapter of TRS, the Association of Texas Professional Educators, and the International Reading Association. Traveling with friends for fun, as well as teaching the Bible to children all over the world, reading, watching movies, and having people in her home were activities Danah enjoyed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldon and Elsie Abbett of Garland, Texas, both in 2006.
Danah is survived by her sister, Denece Powell, of Garland, Texas; nephew, Eric Powell (Jennifer), of Garland, Texas and Karlton Powell (Lisa), of Kansas City, Missouri. She is also survived by great nieces and nephews, Lauren Powell and Melissa Powell, of Garland, Texas, Alexander Powell (Haley), and son, Whittaker, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Adam Powell and Alan Powell also of Kansas City, Missouri.
Sincere thanks are expressed to the to the staff at Grand Brook Memory Care and Trinity Hospice for their tender care and attention.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 9, 2022, at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75243. The Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 pm in the Memorial Chapel with burial to follow.
