(Mrs Susan J Bates, Gary, Texas, Widow's Application for a Pension, filed April 1914 and approved June 1, 1914.)

His stepfather, J M Welch, appears to have been conscripted in Shelby County, Texas, on February 19, 1862, as a private in Jesse Amason's Company D, O M Roberts' Regiment. John Melear Welch died at age 59, on September 21, 1889, and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Timpson, Texas.

John Bates died in Asylum at Austin, Texas, on November 15, 1901. John's brother, W W Bates, died in Joaquin, Shelby County, Texas, on June 4, 1930.
