Batesburg, March 7 - Elisha Jones, who died at his home in Batesburg yesterday morning, was born near Jones' Cross roads in Aiken County, December 19, 1849. He grew to young manhood in this section and in the year 1869, he moved to Batesburg, where he lived continuously until the time of his death. His remains were buried in the Batesburg cemetery today, the service being conducted by the Rev. N. N. Burton and the Rev. Jabes Farris, assisted by Dr. C. A. Jones, the Rev. H. R. Jones and the Rev. W. J. Snyder.

When Mr. Jones came to Batesburg in 1869 the town had just been laid out. He entered the employ of Gunter & Jones, a firm composed of U. X. Gunter and Seaborn Jones, the latter being his father. This was the second business concern to locate in Batesburg. Later Mr. Jones became a member of the firm which was then operated as Jones & Son. In 1875 he withdrew from this firm and began business on his own account, and until 1903 the business of E. Jones was one of the best known enterprises in this section of the State. As president of the E. Jones company he remained in active business until 1910, when he gave up most of his mercantile activities and devoted himself largely to farming.

During his long residence Mr. Jones gave his active interest in the development of his adopted town. It is on record that in 1903 he had served the town as mayor for 15 years. He served another term after that, retiring in 1905. He was not active in the town politics until the past year when he was again elected mayor, having consented to be a candidate only after much solicitation. As an evidence of his popularity it is cited that he was never defeated and often unopposed when making these races.

Mr. Jones married Miss Nancy Stevens in 1875. Mrs. Jones survives him with the following children: A. C. Jones, Batesburg; A. S. Jones, Batesburg; Mrs. D. W. Daniel, Clemson College; C. E. Jones, Batesburg; Miss Agnes Jones, Musical Instructor of Columbia college, Columbia; Mrs. J. R. Unger, Batesburg, and W. S. Jones, Augusta, Ga. He is also survived by two sisters, Misses Alice and Marcella Jones, Batesburg.

Mr. Jones joined the Baptist Church at Batesburg in 1870, and remained a faithful member until his death. He always stood ready to assist any that was in need, and he was a liberal contributor to all the causes fostered by his demonimation. Much of his time, even while actively engaged in business, was devoted to the interest of others less fortunate than himself. In all his affairs he was noted for an honesty that was obstinate, never permitting himself to be swerved from his ideals of justice. His business acquaintance was large and his personal friendships were bounded only by his acquaintanceship. Every one who knew him trusted him.

In the death of Mr. Jones the community has met a loss that will be hard to replace.
