Josiah Fowle was born in Massachusetts to William and Sarah Richardson Fowle. In the early 1800's he established himself as a merchant in Washington, Beaufort County, NC. At least two of his younger brothers and one sister also moved to Washington in the early 1800's. Josiah married Miss Mary Carr of Edgecombe County in January 1822. In the late summer of the same year, they travelled on one of the Fowle ships to the West Indies. They were never heard from again. Whether the ship foundered or was boarded by pirates who made the crew and passengers walk the plank will never be known.
