1595 Private A P Plowman, 2nd Battalion the Scots Guards. The 2nd Battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Britannic on 15 Mar 1900, and arrived at the Cape on 5 Apr 1900. Along with the 2nd Grenadiers, 2nd East Yorkshire, and 1st Leinster Regiment, they formed the 16th Brigade under Major General Barrington Campbell. They were present at Biddulphsberg on 29 May 1900 (5 killed, 21 wounded). In Sep 1900 the battalion formed part of a column based on Harrismith under Campbell. In Oct 1900, along with the 2nd Grenadiers and some Imperial Yeomanry, they were trekking with General Rundle in the Bethlehem district, and on 26 Oct 1900, when marching back to Harrismith, a strong force of Boers were found posted on hills commanding the road. The positions were cleared "in spite of a very stubborn resistance". Four weeks later Campbell again found the enemy in a strong position at Tiger's Kloof. After sharp fighting their main position was taken by the Scots Guards. The battalion took part in many other operations in the north-east of the Orange River Colony during the remainder of the campaign. Private Plowman died of disease at 19 Stationary Hospital, Harrismith on 26/27 April 1901. He was buried on 27 Apr 1901. He is also commemorated on a Boer War memorial board in Holy Trinity Church, Trinity Place, Windsor, Berkshire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/200105/ and http://www.berkswm.org/BWM3023.html).
