Rafael "Lito" Fierro passed away on February 15th in El Paso Texas at the age of 88. Rafael was born on January 3rd, 1920 to Rafael and Sabina Fierro. He was raised in Sanderson, Texas, where he graduated from Sanderson High School. He excelled in all sports and received many honors and awards for his athleticism.He joined the Army in 1941; while stationed in Ft. Bliss, Texas he met his wife Mary whom he married in April 1943. While serving in the Army he played on the Army sports team at Fort Bliss, Texas. He set sail for the Southwest Pacific arriving in Australia, continued on to New Guinea and to the Philippines where he helped liberate American prisoners in Manila. He moved to Lucena, Philippines Islands, where his duty with Troop C, 5th Calvary Regiment, 1st Calvary Division ended. During World War II he was awarded: the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII. He is one of many World War II Veterans featured in "The U.S. Latino and Latina WWII Oral History Project Group: A Legacy Greater Than Words. Stories of U.S. Latinos & Latinas of the World War II Generation", pg. 122. http://www.lib.utexas.edu/ww2latinos/browse-branch.html. He retired from Finance and Accounting, Fort Bliss Texas, after 30 years. He served as Director of the El Paso Boy's Club #3 during the 50's and 60's where he was instrumental in developing and coaching sports programs. He also helped organize the first girl's Bobbysox Softball League in Northeast El Paso. He received many awards and was most proud of the "Golden Boy Award" presented to him by the Optimist Boys Club of El Paso in 1959. He influence, guidance, and support helped many teens during the late 1950's and 1960's. His love of sports continued into his senior years when he represented El Paso in the Senior Games in Austin, Texas. He enjoyed fishing, the horse races, all sports, especially the UTEP Basketball teams and family gatherings. He belonged to the Catholic church, where he was a member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society and a proud member of the American Legion Post 0058. His family, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren were his joy.He was preceded in death by his son David Fierro, his parents, Rafael and Sabina Fierro; his sisters, Isidra Gutierrez, Inez Lopez, Tomasa Trevino, and his only brother, Bernardo Lopez (WWII). He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Fierro, whom he loved dearly. They raised 6 children, his sons Rafael Fierro Jr. of Los Angeles Ca., Wally Fierro (Marie) of Los Angeles; his daughters Rebecca Fierro of Los Angeles, Ca., Irene Fierro of South Pasadena, Ca., and Sally Fierro, of El Paso Texas. His Grandchildren: Michael Fierro (Raquel), Gabriel Fierro, Darlene Fierro Gomez (Harvey), David A. Fierro, Daniel R. Fierro, Rafael Hernandez (Juanita), Valerie and Nicole Fierro, Katherine Fierro. Great Grandchildren: Dominic, Isaiah, Zacariah Gomez, Jacqueline Fierro, Lauren and Luke Hernandez; sister, Antonia Lopez, Andrews, Texas; many cousins, nephews, nieces and countless friends. Special thanks to the staff and nurses at Mesa Hills Specialty Hospital 5th floor, Sierra Hospital, Providence Hospital 328, and Horizon Healthcare 4th floor; Dr. R. Moreno, Dr. Quintana, Dr. Jackson, Dr. Hallow, Dr. J. Gouveia and Dr. Jens, Msgr. Victor Kayrouz, Elizabeth Flores (WWII Project) all family and friends for your prayers. Pallbearers: Rafael Fierro, Wally Fierro, Michael Fierro, Gabriel Fierro, David Fierro, Ralph Hernandez. Honarary Pallbearers will be his extended family, the endless people who cared for him these last two months and all of his friends at the Eastside Senior Citizen center. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 20th 2008, from 5-9 PM with recitation of the Rosary at 7 PM at Harding-Orr and McDaniel Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at 9:30 AM at Holy Family/St. Anthony of the Desert Catholic Church, 900 W. Missouri, El Paso, Texas. Burial will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony of the Desert Church, 104 Fewel St, El Paso, Texas, 79902.
