MARY CAROLYN SCHWAB DRAKES A Memorial Service to honor and remember Mary Carolyn Schwab Drakes of Peachtree City, GA, will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2006, at 2:00 pm at the First Christian Church of Decatur, 601 W. Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, GA. A Graveside Service will immediately follow at the Decatur Cemetery, 299 Bell Street, Decatur. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 31, 2006, between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm at A. S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur. Mary Carolyn, the daughter of the late Dr. Charles Francis Schwab and Vivian Cummings Schwab, was born May 10, 1928 in Enid, Oklahoma. She lived in Oklahoma and Bridgewater, Connecticut prior to moving to Decatur, Georgia in 1942. Mary Carolyn graduated from Decatur Girls High School where she was a majorette for the Decatur High Band and cellist in the Decatur High Orchestra. During high school, she also was a pianist for the Decatur Ballet. After graduating from Agnes Scott College in 1950 with a degree in history and economics, Mary Carolyn became a teacher for the Atlanta City Schools. She married the late Robert Edwin Drakes, Sr., in 1951. They had two children, Vivienne Ryan Drakes McKinney of Winter Park, FL and Robert Edwin Drakes, Jr., of Peachtree City, GA. Mary Carolyn taught kindergarten at the East Lake and Samuel Inman Elementary Schools. She also taught first grade at Spring Street Elementary School. In 1969, Mary Carolyn and her family moved to Macon, Georgia, where Mary Carolyn taught kindergarten, first and fifth grades at the Georgia Academy for the Blind. She became a Braille specialist and was a beloved teacher by her students. Mary Carolyn retired from the State of Georgia following a thirty-four year teaching career. Upon retirement, Mary Carolyn traveled, volunteered for the Macon Symphony Orchestra, organized alumnae and class reunion events at Agnes Scott College, joined the Starrs-Mill DAR, and participated in the Presbyterian Women's Bible Study. Mary Carolyn is remembered for her trust in God and his loving providence, embracing life fully, and seeing the goodness in her family, friends, and her community. She is survived by her two children, son-in-law Robert Edwin McKinney, and four granddaughters, Laura Robin McKinney, Caroline Ann McKinney, Savannah Ryan Drakes, and Miranda Davis Drakes. Mary Carolyn is also survived by her paternal aunt, Margaret Millard, brothers, Charles Timothy "Buddy" Schwab, David Cummings Schwab, and her sister-in-law, Mara Gilmer Schwab. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Charles F. Schwab Scholarship Fund c/o The First Christian Church of Decatur, The First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City, or Agnes Scott College. A. S. Turner & Sons
