William John Graham HODGES was the eldest child of
Samuel HODGES (about 1781-1861, son of William HODGES) by his second wife,
Margaret Ann GRAHAM (1811-1897, married 1840, daughter of John GRAHAM & Selita CRAWFORD).
William John Graham HODGES' parentage is evident from his father's will of 1850, proved 1861 in Effingham County. William John Graham HODGES was named for his two grandfathers, William HODGES and John GRAHAM.

In 1867, William married Martha Ann COLSON (daughter of David T. COLSON & Martha Ann COUGHRAN).

William John Graham HODGES & Martha Ann COLSON were the parents of five children, born 1868-1880:
Laura Frances HODGES AUSTIN (1868-1948),
Samuel David HODGES (1870-1948, was named for his two grandfathers, Samuel HODGES and David T. COLSON),
Alexander HODGES (1873-1939, named for his great uncle, Alexander GRAHAM),
Clarence HODGES (1876-1934), and
Lewis Wamsley HODGES (1880-1946, named for his great uncle, Lewis L. WAMSLEY Sr.).

Summary of his C.S.A. Service Record: MUSTER ROLL OF *CO. E, 47th REGIMENT GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY ARMY OF TENNESSEE C. S. A. BRYAN, CHATHAM, EFFINGHAM COUNTIES CHATHAM VOLUNTEERS *See Co. E, 11th Battn. Ga. Inf. for records prior to May 12, 1862. Hodges, William J. G.- private September 9, 1862. Roll for October 31,1862, last on file, shows him "absent under orders." Pension records show he was wounded at Chickamauga, Ga. September 19, 1863, and was in Augusta, Ga. hospital close of war.

These memorials to members of the HODGES and related families of Effingham and Screven Counties are dedicated to William Clifford REEVES of North Carolina, who died in 2006, a dedicated and generous genealogist with whom I researched these families during 1999-2001.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<His oath of allegiance described his with dark complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes, and 5'8" tall.

As far as his name is concerned, he was obviously named after his father, William, and his middle name from family. The HODGES and GRAHAMs were close and he may have been named after one of his three different aunts; Mary GRAHAM, Margaret GRAHAM or Flora GRAHAM.

Father: William HODGES b. 1798 in Screven County
Mother: Martha Colson HODGES b.?
He married: Martha COLSON b.Jan 22, 1852, daughter of David T.

Many people mistakenly think his father is Samuel HODGES b.1782 in FL and died and buried in Effingham County,GA. However, there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Documentation CLEARLY shows he was born in Screven County, raised in Screven with his older brother Thomas Marion HODGES which he seemed to worship. They joined the 25th GA in Screven TOGETHER, looked out for each other in the war; got separated from their unit TOGETHER, and rejoined the 47th to get back to their unit TOGETHER; they are buried TOGETHER in North Newington Cemetery. William FITS into this family as his father well. No contradictory evidence, no forcing of the pieces together. Samuel does NOT fit into this Hodges family puzzle.

Documentation: provided by Screven 1850 census; Isaac Hodges Bible record and other family records from Mrs. Evelyn Austin from Sylvania (Hodges/Austin historian); William Reeves of Dudley NC in his booklet "Descendent's Of William Hodges" held by Screven County Library; Mormon (LDS) record of Salt Lake City Utah; as well as personal family records of mine, his great grandson.
