Judith ("Judy") Kay Johnson, 78, passed away Sunday, January15, 2023, at her home in Lexington, KY. She is survived by Peter F. "Pete" Johnson, her loving husband of 58 years, who she met and fell in love with while both attended college in Rolla, MO. Judy was born on September 14, 1944, in St. Louis to the late Wayne and Eunice (Flett) Edmondson. She was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Mae, who died in 1940. Judy graduated from Rolla High School, where she was editor of the newspaper and yearbook and active in several student organizations. She was a 1961 Missouri Girl's State member. She attended Missouri School of Mines in Rolla and the University of Missouri in Columbia, majoring in Journalism and Elementary Education before marrying Pete in 1964. She then worked as a bank teller and elementary school secretary to help put Pete through college and graduate school.
Judy was a stay-at-home mom while Pete worked for a consulting engineering firm in Chicago and St Louis. In the late 1970's, one of Pete's projects took the family for nearly three years to Perth, Western Australia, which Judy loved for its friendly people and wonderful wildlife. After returning to St Louis, Judy remained very active in the Women's Fellowship group at Prince of Peace UCC and the Mother's Clubs in the Lindbergh School District. She was a Girl Scout leader and a pitcher on a local women's softball team.
Judy was an avid amateur genealogist and completed a family tree of thousands of ancestors of her mother and her father, the latter used as part of a family book written by her cousin Dale in California. She traced her mother's family back nearly 400 years to the Orkney Islands near Scotland, which she and Pete visited in 1979 to start her research. She was also active in "Find a Grave" which involved locating, photographing and posting on a website the headstones of family members whose relatives live elsewhere.
Judy and Pete moved to Lexington in 1998. In addition to her husband, Judy is survived by a son, Dr. Chris Johnson, DVM, and three grandchildren (Gabrielle, Erin, and Declan) of Marietta, GA, and a daughter, Staci (Jay) O'Leary of Cincinnati, OH. Survivors also include a brother, Gary (Iris) Edmondson of Ocala, FL and their daughter Mandy and other extended family members in Missouri. Judy was a devoted wife, wonderful mother, loving grandmother, and good friend of all who knew her.
Visitation and services will be Saturday January 21 at Null and Sun Funeral Home in Rolla, MO followed by burial in the family plat in Anutt, MO, near Rolla. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the American Diabetes Association. A memorial service for Judy will be held in Lexington at a later date.
