Col. Murphy served in the US Army Air Corps in World War I and was in the US Army Signal Corps during World War II. He was a radar and communications expert and pioneer. He was stationed at Ft. Shafter during the attack on Pearl Harbor and set up the radar on Opana Point. Then on 2/3/1942, while he was flying on a mission (B18 36-338) to inspect the Dutch radars per Gen. Brereton's request, he was KIA as the plane upon which he was riding was shot down over Surabaya, Indonesia. There were two Camp Murphy's named after him located in Florida and Australia. Interment was at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
