She attended Mineral Point High School and graduated in 1973. After school, she worked at Carnes Company in Verona, WI and then became a CNA at Mineral Point Care Center where she cared for the elderly. In 1978 she started at Lands' End and worked different jobs until settling into Customer Service, where she worked until her retirement in 2016 after 38 years. Working in customer service was a perfect fit for Colleen's knack for helping people and ability to show compassion during difficult situations. Her passion for serving also related well to her time as a waitress at many local bars and restaurants including Schmitz's Bar, Pilling's Pub and Dodge Point Country Club.
She was the most caring person that anyone could ever hope to be. Colleen took care of everyone around her without ever expecting anything in return. She cared for her father and mother as each of them had health decline while staying positive through it all. After her retirement she took on the responsibility of caring for her special brother, Mark. The years that they spent together were a godsend to both and the special bond that they shared was one that each carried until their last breath on Earth, only eleven days apart.
Colleen was the best mom that any kid could wish for. She worked tirelessly as a single mother at multiple jobs to ensure that her children were well taken care of and did not go without. Her ability to balance work and family was one that all parents should strive for. She was proud of her children and grandchildren's accomplishments and rarely missed an event for them until her health prevented her from attending. One time after Jason, her "number one son," hit a homerun in the baseball regional finals, her screaming with pride could be heard throughout the ballpark. Colleen always made it a point to take her daughter, Erin and bonus daughter Holly shopping on weekends followed up by a fancy meal at a local restaurant.
She loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. Colleen always kept a tidy house and was lovingly known as "Clean" Colleen to her sisters. Her dinner and cinnamon rolls were legendary in the Basting house, with many requests by her brothers to make more! Weeny loved her trips to Florida with girlfriends and wherever in the world that her sister Teresa would drag her.
Colleen was a lifelong member of Ss. Mary and Paul Catholic Church in Mineral Point, WI, where she was a woman of faith that attended church weekly until her health declined.
Colleen is survived by her children, Jason (Kanndie) Basting, Mineral Point, WI; Erin (Adam) Weil, Wauwatosa, WI; grandchildren, Bella and Brooklyn Basting; Lincoln and Griffin Weil; siblings, John (Kelly) Basting, Boyd, Texas; Maureen Kolwicz (Denny Sporle), Mineral Point, WI; Teresa MacGilvra, Mineral Point, WI; Kent MacGilvra, Mineral Point, WI; Nieces and Nephews, Emily and Jackson Basting, Dylan, Valentyna and Trevor MacGilvra; special Irish sister, Kate Schaaf.
She was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Doris Basting; brother, Mark; former son-in-law, Scott Berget; along with infant niece, MacKenzie MacGilvra.
Patience, kindness, selflessness and forgiveness were words that Colleen lived by. She was a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Her caring heart will be remembered by all that knew Colleen and we will all know that she is looking down on us with that crooked smile and sparkle in her eyes.
Her children and family did everything possible to keep Colleen comfortably living at home since the diagnosis of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in 2020.
Burial will be held in St. Paul's Cemetery
