Marna Cathrine Fletcher (nee Mathiasen)
October 20, 1925 - April 11, 2017
With painful emotions, we advise that Marna Fletcher's courageous struggle reached a peaceful end on April 11, in her 92nd year, after a brief stay at Toronto General Hospital.
Marna was predeceased by her husband Doug, sisters Ruth (Gard) and Alice (Born) and brother Harald (Hank), as well as brothers-in-law Donald and George and sisters-in- law Norma (Benner), Betty (Charlish) and Elna (Mathiasen).
She is survived by her brother Peter and his wife Barbara, of Aldergrove, BC, and sisters-in-law Audrey (Mathiasen), of Calgary, AB, and Barb (Wraith), of Lucan, ON, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
The eldest of her siblings, Marna was the only one who came to Canada from Denmark; she and her mother immigrated to a farm in southwest Saskatchewan to reunite with her father in 1927. When she was old enough to go to school, it was thought best that Marna wait a year, until Ruth was old enough to join her, to avoid traveling the distance on her own. By the time the snow arrived on the prairie, Marna had learned to handle a horse and sleigh well enough to take Ruth and later Alice to school. It was at that school, Edenvale School in Redvers, SK, where all three sisters began learning English. In 1938, the family migrated again, this time to a farm outside Toronto. They built their spiritual and social lives together around St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, while Marna and her sisters attended Earl Haig Collegiate.
In 1945, Marna married Paul Nielsen of Toronto, but the union ended in divorce. By then, her distinguished banking career was underway, first with the Bank of Nova Scotia and then the Bank of Montreal. Spanning more than 40 years, it included a stint at the Bloor and St. George branch in Toronto where she met her husband of 55 years, Doug Fletcher. Assigned together to many branches across Ontario, their joint career ultimately took them to First Canadian Place in Toronto, where Marna became one of the first female loans officers in the country. She was the senior officer in the branch the day a man came in to open an account to deposit the $1,000,000 cheque he'd won in a new government lottery.
Beyond her career, Marna was an avid supporter of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as well as the Canadian Opera Company. She volunteered in various capacities for the COC; its many opera tours for members took her to performances around the world, from Sydney, Australia, to St. Petersburg, Russia. After retiring, she and Doug helped organize the annual Bank of Montreal Pensioners' Luncheon.
A longtime resident, with Doug, of Rathburn Road, Etobicoke, Marna had more recently been a resident of Kensington Gardens, a long-term care home in Toronto. There, she received expert and compassionate care from Kensington staff and her longtime private caregivers, Evelyn and Felicidad. Since Doug's death in 2012, Thornbrooke Home Care has provided Marna with excellent caregivers. Special thanks also to Kensington's Anna Slawski, director of resident care, and Dr. Ben Kaasa, for their kindness, attentive care and easy communication through a difficult time.
Thanks also to the medical staff at Toronto General for their care and kindness during Marna's final weeks.
Marna will be remembered for her elegance and sophistication, as well as her ready smile and laughter.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 from 10 a.m. until the time of Funeral Service at 11 a.m. to be held at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, 1498 Avenue Rd., North York, ON, followed by interment at York Cemetery, 160 Beecroft Rd, North York, ON.
In lieu of flowers, please remember her with a donation to the Alzheimer Society Ontario.
