Almeta Boykin Hurtt, 76, of Westfield died on Thursday, February 3, at home.
Born and raised in Scotch Plains, she was the eldest of eight children of the late Deacon and Deaconess Edward and Lillian Boykin. She was educated through the Scotch Plains public school system and moved with her family to Westfield in 1963.

Mrs. Hurtt worked for many years with children and senior citizens at the Westfield Community Center before her retirement.

She was a member of St. John's Baptist Church in Scotch Plains and of its Floral Club, where she served as President and held various other offices for several years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond E. Hurtt, Sr., whom she married in 1941; two sons, Raymond E. "Herkey" Hurtt, Jr. and Keith E. Hurtt; her brother, Benjamin Boykin; two sisters, Edith Nettingham and Marie Nettingham, and a grandson.

Surviving are a daughter, Gladys "Bunny" Chambliss of Green Brook; a son, Petty Officer Kevin T. Hurtt of Westfield; four sisters, Louise Briggs of Roselle, Marion Steward of Elizabeth, Priscilla Bullock of Scotch Plains and Edwina Davis of Plainfield; 11 grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

A funeral service was held on Monday, February 7, at St. John's Baptist Church. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Nesbitt Funeral Home in Elizabeth.
