Raymond Ira Brewer was born on June 23, 1947, to parents, Robert Ira and Mary Frances (McLanahan) Brewer. His sister, Shirley (Brewer) Fletcher joined him in 1949 and his brother Rod joined him in 1951.

The family moved to Helena in 1951. Ray went to Hawthorne School, had an Independent Record paper route and built his own custom 51 Chevy with a bored-out 283 V8. He and classmate, Joe Longmire, won the 1965 Plymouth Trouble Shooting contest at Helena High and they went on to compete in the State Champion Title. Ray graduated in 1965 from Helena High School.

He married Cheryl Ann Fagan in 1970 in Portland, OR.
