CALLED TO HER REWARD
Again has the Grim Reaper visited our community and removed from our midst a good and noble woman, Mrs. Mary Stevens born Austin, who answered the final summons on Tuesday, May 18, 1920, at 7:15 a.m. at her home on South Banker street. She was 71 years old.
For 25 years the deceased had been an invalid suffering with chronic rheumatism. Some little time ago she received a slight paralytic stroke. and this coupled with her rheumatic troubles and her depleted vitality. weighed heavily on her. from which she did not rally thus ending in her death.
During her long years of suffering she never murmured, for she had the blessed assurance that "To die is gain."
Mrs. Stevens had been a resident of Effingham for some 30 years having come here from Newton, Ill.
The deceased was a devout Christian woman. She was a willing worker, with a heart full of love and eagerness for the growth of the Kingdom here. As a neighbor and friend, she was true and faithful, and her work was never too tiresome to prevent her from exerting all her efforts for the relief of others. She was honest, upright and prompt in the discharge of her duties. She was a kind loving and indulgent mother and sister.
She abhorred sin and wrongdoing and could always be found on the side of right. Our community feels the loss of such an excellent woman. May our lives be made better by having had such a friend as Sister Stevens. May the richest blessings of God be with her. Sleep on beloved, sleep on, and take thy rest.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Julia Campbell, who has lived with her for many years and tenderly cared for her, and one brother, Calvin Austin, of Downer's Grove, Ill., who was at her bedside during her last hours, besides numerous near relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held from the residence this (Thursday) afternoon at 1:00 o'clock, conducted by Rev. F. W. Kirkpatrick, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, after which the remains will be taken to Newton on the 2:30 p m passenger train of the Effingham-Indianapolis Division of the Illinois Central Railroad where burial will be made in Riverside cemetery.
