Smets August was part of the militia class of 1903 and fulfilled his military service with the Artillery Fortified Fortress Liège.
In August 1914 he was fighting with his comrades in the position of the forts of Liège but had to withdraw after the fall of Liège. It is unclear here whether he was going to provide reinforcement to the Fortress of Namur but he was killed in action near the Fort of Marchovelette by Boninne (Namur) on the 21st of August 1914. He was locally buried on the 23rd of August 1914.
Soldier Smets was reburied at the Military Cemetery of Boninne on the 30th of January 1922 . He was exhumed and reburied on the 29th of January 1925 in Attenhoven.
The ecclesiastical burial was on the 10th of March 1925
