Horst was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1942 after graduating from high school early. He was a good student and liked to play football. His special talent was drawing. Horst was home for the last time from mid to late January 1945. He told how the German soldiers could not retreat at all as quickly as the Soviet soldiers were advancing on Silesia. Although he had heart damage from diphtheria and was slightly injured in his right hand, he had to continue fighting under the hated General Ferdinand Schörner. Horst's last letter to the family is dated March 1945. He probably died near Friedeck (now Frýdek, Czech Republic).
