She was born on August 22, 1933 to the late Gordon and Bernice Lorraine (Teter) Murray in Winfield, KS, and has lived at Holy Cross Village since December 2012, coming from Tampa, FL. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter, Teresa Roth; a brother, Warren Murray; and her brother-in-law, Charles Ashley.
Wanda attended the University of Kansas, where she graduated with a degree in music. On June 8, 1953, as Wanda M. Murray, she married J. Robert Ashley at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence, KS. She was always devoted to her family, and was also an accomplished cellist who played in the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. Always committed to helping others, she later pursued a second career as a counselor, earning a Masters Degree in Counseling from the University of South Florida, and working for over twenty years as a counselor, including at Alpha House of Tampa, a crisis-pregnancy center. She was beloved by many clients who kept in touch with her after she moved to Holy Cross Village. She loved reading, playing her cello, watching tennis, and playing with her grandchildren.
Wanda is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, J. Robert Ashley of Notre Dame, IN; one daughter, Amelia (Stan) Kulp of Lawrenceville, GA; one son, J. Matthew (Anselma) Ashley of South Bend, IN; a son-in-law, Larry Roth of Louisville, CO; seven grandchildren, Taylor Kulp, Austin (Holly) Kulp, Kira (fiancé John) Kulp, Zachary (Anna) Kulp; John Ashley, Hannah Ashley, Rose Ashley; and two great grandchildren, Griffin and Richard Kulp. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Madeline Ashley, and two brothers-in-law, Francis Ashley and Howard Ashley.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2023 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, IN 46628, where a Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2023 at St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, IN. Cremation will follow. Burial will take place at Pikes Peak National Cemetery, Colorado Springs, CO, at a later date.
