John Collins Freeman

Boise, Idaho - Born January 29, 1928, in Evanston, Illinois to Alexander Riddler Freeman and Ruth Halsey. Died January 18, 2023, with his family in Boise, Idaho.
John, a genuine gentleman; attended Duke University and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1949 with a BA in Political Science and Economics.
John served in the United States Army in Austria with the Medical Corps from November 1950 to November 1952 as a corpsman and lab technician, proudly reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant.
John married Vera Maxine Giles on February 23, 1957 and lived a wonderful life together for Sixty-six years. In 1961, John, Maxine and their two sons moved to Northern California where they lived in Aptos, CA until 1990; at which point the couple retired in Boise, Idaho.
John had a 24-year career in college textbook publishing with Richard D Irwin/Dorsey Press
before deciding to become a small business owner in Santa Cruz.
A member of Rotary International since 1981, John served as President of his Rotary Club in California. He promptly joined the Boise Southwest Rotary Club and accepted whatever duty his new Club required. John was elected the Rotary District 5400 Governor for 1996-1997. John and Maxine visited every club in the district. This duty was a joyful grand tour of Idaho.
Always civic minded, John served on multiple boards: Little League, Opera, SCORE and Sons of the American Revolution.
John had a long-standing interest in genealogy and traced his family tree back to the 14th Century England. He supported historical preservation organizations and was a life member of the VFW and American Legion.
John was an avid sports fan, and a charter subscriber to Sports Illustrated Magazine. He enjoyed countless hours watching his favorite teams, including his beloved Chicago Cubs, winning the 2016 World Series Championship! Go Cubs Go!
John worshipped at Wright Congregational Church having served in various capacities at Methodist and Presbyterian churches.
John is survived by his wife Maxine, son Kenneth C. Freeman, son Douglas G. Freeman and Doug's wife Caroline A. Freeman along with the best grandsons ever: Matthew and Tyler Freeman, all of Boise.
Interment will be a private family service at the Idaho State Veteran's Cemetery Columbarium. Memorials may be sent to Wright Congregational Church 4921 Franklin Road, Boise 83705 or Boise Southwest Rotary P.O. Box 8092, Boise 83707
