Mrs. E.J. Coe Passed Away Tuesday Afternoon, March 10, After a Long Suffering From Cancer
Mrs. E.J. Coe formally Esther J. Martin, was born in Camillus, on November 25, 1850, and had always lived here with the exception of twelve years after her marriage, when she took up her residence in Rome, NY. She survived her husband by 9 years, and her son the only child by fourteen years. She was a member of the Camillus Baptist Church, since a girl and died nursing two years ago when she was taken sick. She took to her bed three months ago and after great suffering, died Tuesday, March 10, at her home in the village.
She was faithfully taken care of during her last illness by her niece, Florence De Pew, who has lived with her for many years.
Mrs. Coe had a noble Christian character. She was a friend to all and always lent a hand to folks in trouble. She kept wonderfully cheerful even through her long, painful illness, patiently trusting in her creator until she was called home. The funeral was held Friday, March 13, at 1:00 p.m. at the house and at 2:00 p.m. at the Baptist Church. It was very largely attended, the main body of the church being nearly filled. Rev, R.J. Silcox officiated. The choir of the church sang. The pallbearers were: Ernest Ashby of Memphis, William Donnelly, Charles Carpenter, and William Howell. The burial was in Maplewood. The deceased is survived by two brothers, Frank and Ananias O. Martin of Syracuse; several nieces, Florence De Pew, Mrs. F. Graeneger, and Mrs. Florence Doherty, Mrs. Bessie Quinn, and Alice Martin of Syracuse, Mrs. Edna Wood of Camillus; an uncle, Ananias Ashby of Camillus; and two nephews, Earl Martin of Syracuse and Charles P. De Pew of New York. All of these relatives were at the funeral except the last.
Card of Thanks
I desire to thank all the kind neighbors and friends who assisted in any way during the illness and death of Mrs. E.J. Coe; the Baptist choir and the minister, and also the women of the Middlesex Knitting Works, the Y.P.S.C.E., the Women's Missionary Circle for the flowers at the funeral.
