MARGARET BAITY
...Mrs. Margaret Baity, one of the oldest residents of this city, died at her home here last night after an illness of several weeks. Had she lived until October 23, she would have been ninety. During her illness she spoke of her birthday being just around the corner. This day was always looked forward to and many celebrations were held in her honor.
...Margaret Saunders, daughter of John S. and Nancy Saunders, was born in Van Buren County, Iowa on October 23, 1844. She came to Missouri in March, 1854 and except for brief intervals, has made her home in and near La Plata since that date. As a girl she lived here and kept house for her father having been bereft of her mother when quite young. She remembers when the town was centered at the intersection of Clark and Owenby streets with very few houses, a hotel and one store.
...With her death goes many of the early memories of our village.
...On March 1, 1866 she was married to George W. Baity, a veteran of the Civil War who had served with the Union forces in the 7th Missouri Cavelry.
...As a wife and mother her home was established on a farm one mile north of La Plata where seven boys and girls grew to manhood and womanhood. The husband, George W. Baity, was taken by death July 12, 1891, also one son, George Milton Baity on August 27, 1924.
...In April, 1900 she moved in the house from where death removed her July 25, 1934 after a lingering illness, aged eighty-nine years, nine months and two days, the last member of a large family.
...She was a member of the Christian church and continued an active member of the Ruth Circle Bible Class until health failed her.
...There are left to mourn her passing, Mrs. Nancy Foster and husband of Colville, Washington, Mrs. Hattie Hedman and husband of Toronto, Canada, Enoch A. Baity and wife of Quesnel, B.C., Mrs. Ethel Sears and husband of Yakima, Washington, Mrs. Lizzie Baity of Arkansas City, Kansas, Mrs. Mary Fraser and C. E. Baity and wife of La Plata. There are nineteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
...Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. M.F. Dawson, assisted by Fred L. Hudson. Burial in La Plata cemetery beside her husband.
