Severo "Slim" Gonzáles, age 93, of Española, passed away on January 31, 2023, of natural causes.
Severo was born in Española, NM on July 2, 1929, the son of Bences Gonzáles and Ernestina Romero Gonzáles.
Severo was preceded in death by his son, Donald, brothers, Victor and Raymond and sister, Lauren Noell.
Severo is survived by his wife of 67 years, Aurora, two sons, Glenn of Española and David of Boston, MA, sisters, Stephanie Cruz of Boulder CO and Theresa McClendon of Newton, KS, grandchildren, Andrea and Kristen of Loveland, CO, Elias, Elena and Bryan of Española) and Amanda o Santa Fé, NM.
Severo graduated from Los Alamos High School, Class of 1947. Throughout high school he excelled in multiple sports including basketball, baseball and football. Post high school he attended the El Rito Normal School, studying various trades.
In his early 20's, he joined the United States Air Force, serving as a Sergeant with great pride. Severo had fond memories of being stationed in Morocco and touring various countries during his service.
It was when he returned home to Los Alamos he met Aurora at the Post Office, where she was working, asked her on a date and the rest is history.
Severo was an explorer of nature and geography, an appreciation he shared with his father and grandfather. Severo was a devoted husband and father, he enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing and hunting with his three sons, and his father in earlier years. Severo took care of both parents in later years. His grandchildren are a symbol of his instilled values of respect, moral principles and ethical behavior. Severo was a member of La Iglesia de Santa Cruz and an hermano with La Confradia de La Santisima Trinidad.
Severo loved, gardening, long drives, telling stories of his tour of duty and the Los Alamos Ranch School, which was instrumental in his family's upbringing.
Other hobbies included wood carving, reading and being with friends and family.
A rosary will take place on Friday February 24, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Santa Cruz de la Canada with a mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m. A burial will take place at Santa Fé National Cemetery, Santa Fé, NM at a later date. Pallbearers will be Bryan and Elias Gonzáles, Don Hall, Paul Cruz, John Overheim and Ralph Sánchez. Honorary will be Andrea Gonzáles, Amanda Gonzáles, Elena Gonzáles and Kristen Overheim
