In loving memory of Ernest Hugh Barker…

Member of the British Legion and counted amongst the Civilian War Dead. He died November 12, 1943, age 50.

A.R.P. Rescue Service (Air Raid Precautions). Son of Helena Barker, of Park Green, Wetheringsett, England and the late Nelson Barker. Injured November 10, 1943, at Brome, died at Hartismere Emergency Hospital two days later in Eye.

In 1911 _____? census, Nelson James Barker (46, corn miller) and wife Helena Maria Barker (42, b. London), children Frank Nelson (21, b. Wickham Skeith, Suffolk), Perry William (19, general labourer, b. Wickham Skeith, Suffolk), Ernest Hugh (21, groom____?, b. Cotton, Suffolk), Hilda Blanche (16 b.Offton, Suffolk), Reginald John (14 b.Offton, Suffolk), Florence Jane (7 b. Offton, Suffolk), Edith May (6 b.Offton, Suffolk) and Clementine (4, b. Tuddenham St. Martin, Suffolk). Postal address: Tuddenham St. Martin, Ipswich, Suffolk.

In September 1939 census, Park Green, Wetheringsett, Suffolk County, Helena Barker (b. 1 June 1868) with children Edith May Page (Barker, b. 11 Mar 1905) and Ernest Hugh Barker (roadsman, b. 23 Feb 1893).

Ernest was one of the four Suffolk civilian road workers killed with their horse as a result of a B-17 crash taking the lives of all thirteen American airmen as a result of a fire onboard causing a low altitude crash after takeoff on the morning of November 10, 1943. Two of the civilians died at Brome: William Charles Burridge and Walter Clarke. The two injured, William Dixon died at Hartismere Hospital in Eye upon admission in one account or possibly en route since death place is listed as Brome (crash site) and Ernest Barker died two days later in Eye at the same hospital.

Remembered with honor.
