Merle Sampson, age 91, passed away peacefully Thursday, February 9 in Claremont, North Carolina where he has been living for the past 4 years.

He was formerly a long-time resident of Swanton, OH.

Merle was born in St. Marys, Ohio on January 16, 1932, to the late James and Matilda Sampson.

On September 23, 1955, he married Mary Ann Wellman who passed in 2018. They were married for 63 years.

Merle was a long-time high voltage electrician working for the City of St. Marys, High Voltage Systems and retiring from Toledo Edison in 1993.

He was preceded in death by brothers Bernie, Jim and George, sisters Jean Young Thelma Houser and Shirley Davis.

Surviving are his children Tom Sampson (Paula) of Gallatin, Tennessee, Bill Sampson (Pauline) of Lake Hills, Texas and Bob Sampson (Callie) of Claremont, North Carolina.

He is also survived by grandchildren, Andrea Sampson, Jonna Alexander (Will), Ray Haywood (Amanda), Catrina Sampson, Emily Sampson, Mindy Sampson and Kiel Sampson, great grandchildren Emma Haywood, Everly Haywood, Bryson Alexander, Elliott Jordan and Genaro Cisneros, sister Matilda Washburn and brother Albert Sampson as well as many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Merle was an avid golfer, especially after his retirement.

He was a big supporter of Swanton sports as he and Mary didn't miss any of the sporting events his children were involved in.

He enjoyed watching Ohio State football on fall Saturday's. He would spend many afternoons sitting in his glider feeding and watching birds and squirrels.

The past 4 years he has been cared for mostly by Callie Sampson along with several other caretakers. The family owes a debt of gratitude to Callie for all the care she has provided him over the years.

Visitation will be held from 12:00pm to 3:00pm at the Miller - Long & Folk Funeral Home, 314 W. High St, St. Marys, Ohio on Saturday, February 25, 2023 followed by a funeral service with The Reverend Rhonda Hainer, officiating.

In keeping with Merle's wishes he will be cremated and then he and Mary will be buried together at Elm Grove Cemetery immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
