Abraham Fuller Atkinson was the son of Aaron Atkinson, merchant of Big Butter Lane, County Westmeath, Ireland.

He married Anne Ansley, daughter of the late Amos Ansley of Pittsburgh, Upper Canada, on May 26, 1831.

Their son, William Pryor Atkinson (born 1836) was secretary-treasurer of the diocese of Toronto 1869-84, and bursar of Trinity College 1881-93. He borrowed against college funds and was dismissed, though the case was hushed up.

Abraham studied at Trinity College, Dublin. He immigrated to Canada in 1827. He settled in Quebec and assisted R.R. Burrage at the Royal Grammar School.

He was made Deacon by Rev. C.J. Stewart, on April 24, 1828, and ordained as priest on June 29, 1829 in Quebec, Canada by Rev. Charles J. Stewart.

He was appointed as Assistant minister, at Christ Church, Montreal and took charge of a parochial school.

In 1830 he was the Deputy Grand Chaplain at the inaugural meeting of the Grand Orange Lodge of Canada.

Abraham was instrumental in erecting a little stone church at Laprairie, Quebec in 1832.

From 1836 to 1840 he was the rector of St. John's Church, Bath, Ontario.

In 1840, he and his family moved to St. Catharine's, Ontario where he was the rector of St. George's Church until 1864.

The very first service in Christ Church, McNabb Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario was held on Christmas Eve 1853 and was led by Reverend A.F. Atkinson.

In 1857 he was bestowed with an Honorary DCL, from Trinity College, Toronto.

Abraham retired to Toronto and he died there at his home on Queen's Street in 1866.
